Happy Anniversaries to Me!

Posted on 1st July 2008 in Uncategorized

pipsJuly 1st, 2005! The day I escaped reality and took my current job. The day I was able to rediscover and let loose the kid in me before he disappeared for good. The day nerf guns became acceptable in the workplace. The day I kissed a good night’s sleep goodbye. The day I looked back from a black helicopter to discover I’d been living on a remote island surrounded by deadly reefs. The day the box was broken into little bits. The day I was given the world as a canvas, unprecedented creative satisfaction, cemeteries, cell phones, fireworks, secret concerts, twitchy the clown, ulcers, pen-pals from around the world, and most importantly…

…a banjo.

Game of the Day: Pluto Strikes Back

Posted on 10th March 2007 in Uncategorized

pluto.jpgFrom the Experimental Games Department comes this fun little diversion.

What happens when a planet living on the edge loses its identity? It goes mad and releases its fury on to the unsuspecting solar system. Your job is to control the huge baseball bat that is circulating Pluto. Try to hit the meteors so that they will cause damage to other planets.

Not a flash game, but a downloadable executable. So yeah, windows only.

The Big Definition

Posted on 12th November 2006 in Uncategorized

Defining what exactly constitutes an Alternate Reality Game seems to be a very popular pastime to some. Interestingly enough, it often comes from people who, to me, really have no business attempting to define it at all, while being all to eager to do so (which is the subject for another evening and a bottle of brandy).

One of the few people who I believe to be uniquely qualified, Sean Stacey (founder of Unfiction and co-puppetmaster for Project MU/Metacortechs), has just published a pretty nifty essay on the subject.

While I still subscribe to the notion that a good ARG is, at it’s core, a form of internet archaeology, Sean does a great job quantifying many of those troubling nuances that plague those attempting to pin a definition down.

Anyway, for all you meta-heads out there (and you know who you are!), enjoy!

Plugging In

Posted on 5th September 2006 in Uncategorized

Well, we’re moved in, and getting re-attached to the world, slowly but surely. I’ve just spent the past 4-5 days without an internet connection, and it was….great! Except for the exhaustion part. If I never see another box in my life, I’ll be ok with that.

Interesting bits from the move: 1) Inadvertantly got one of the loaders fired for drinking on the job. OK, so I said they were welcome to whatever they could find in the fridge, which included 4 beers. One guy thought 10:30 am was a good time to start drinking, and the boss-guy fired him when he saw the beer in his hand. Funny enough, I felt guilty.

2) Maybe someone out there can help me with this one. The driver announced soberly that he didn’t think he’d be able to get our grand piano out of the room it was in, which puzzled me greatly, I gotta say. “Um, you’d think if we got it in there, we’d be able to get it out, right?” “Oh, not necessarily!” he replied. Not necessarily?? Now, I didn’t want to argue with him, as he was the head mover-guy in charge of all our earthly belongings, but he swore up and down that the “angles are different” when going the opposite direction, and he didn’t think the piano would fit around the corner. Am I crazy, or is this just….crazy??

Needless to say, they got the piano out. But geez. The angles are….different depending on which direction you’re going?? *BOGGLE*

So anyway, back on line, at least at work. Now to find some time to sleep. :)
