Future Salon: alternate reality games
“Tomorrow’s Future Salon in Second Life is, appropriately, on the topic of alternate reality games and pervasive gaming. Participants include 42 Entertainment‘s Elan Lee (BB pal Jane McGonigal‘s collaborator on projects like ilovebees), Tony “Clickable Culture” Walsh, and Adrian and/or Dan Hon of Mind Candy , creators of Perplex City. The in-game salon takes place tomorrow, Monday 11/27, at 4pm PST. Link

Here’s a direct link to the announcement, which includes links to be able to listen in live if you’re not a SecondLife member.

This whole ARG in virtual space thing is getting bandied about a lot lately, which is strange, to me. While it’s a nifty idea, someone’s definitely missing the point that what makes ARGs unique is the fact that they reach out and touch the REAL WORLD. Unless I’m missing something, what’s being talked about is no different than a typical adventure game, albeit with a new interface.

Social Networks Attract Nearly Half Of All Web Users

The top 10 sites collectively grew 47 percent in the United States from the same month a year ago to 68.8 million unique visitors, Nielsen/NetRatings said. The sites reached 45 percent of active Web users.

This has been something I’ve always tried to stress, as far as ARG design. A big chunk of web surfers have some sort of online community they call home, whether it be MySpace, WeLovePoodles, or Unifiction.

People tend to want to play at “home,” and forcing them into a new social area with new rules, etc., is something players may not want to do. This is just one of the reasons I don’t like “in-game” forums set up as a play space by ARG developers.

As far as ARGs are concerned, most of the time, the Player-base gains critical mass at one location or forum, but that doesn’t mean it always has to be that way.

Witness the Lost Experience. It’s being played and enjoyed at a ton of different places. Gravitational forces may whittle that down to a couple major “go-to” communities, but even if that doesn’t happen, is that so bad?

Autistic Spends 16 Years Designing an Amazing World

Posted on 29th March 2006 in Uncategorized

“Gilles Trehin is an autistic 28-year-old. Since the age of 12, he has been designing an imaginary city called Urville. He has created detailed historical, geographical, cultural, and economic descriptions of the city, as well as an absolutely extraordinary set of drawings. Check out the pics!”

This is pretty amazing, I think. You Perplex City guys still hiring? I’d check this guy out. :)

Perplex City hits the streets again.

Posted on 27th February 2006 in Uncategorized

Joystiq details the live Perplex City Games that commenced over the weekend in London. They had over 200 players, 1147 text messages sent, 3627 text messages received, and 0 arrests.

If I’d have been on the ball, I would’ve been watching the Trafalgar Square webcam to catch the conga line.

Congrats to my friends at Mind Candy for pulling off yet another cool live event! :)
